66 charged with insurance fraud in California sweep - May 2007
Nearly 70 people throughout the valley will be charged with insurance fraud. Most of the arrests happened this week. The operation was conducted in Fresno, Merced,Tulare, Kern and Kings Counties.
The arrests are related to several major investigations. S ome of the fraudulent activities people have been arrested for include, setting cars on fire and falsifying stereo and tire rim receipts in an effort to collect insurance money.
California insurance commissioner Steve Poizner was at Wednesday’s news conference in Clovis. He estimates insurance fraud costs California consumers and businesses $15 billion a year.
Each count of insurance fraud is a felony, and carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in state prison and/or a fine of $50,000.
